I'm Precious

"I'm not strong because life has been easy. I'm strong because life demanded it of me — and somehow, I keep showing up."
Precious Plaatjie in a nutshell
About Me
Some seasons don't ask permission.
I'm a mother, a sister, a caregiver, a guardian, a professional, and a woman of faith — and most days, I'm all of those things before I've even had coffee. A lot of my life has required me to become strong in ways I never chose. I just kept showing up, and somewhere along the way, that became who I am.
I'm the primary caregiver for my sister, Noxolo, and that journey has shaped my life and my voice more than almost anything else. I know what it means to carry the physical, emotional, financial, and mental weight of caring for someone living with a disability — while still raising my children and holding the rest of my family together. It has taught me more about love, sacrifice, grief, and resilience than I ever expected to learn.
I've also lived through loss and seasons I didn't see coming — rebuilding on my own, carrying responsibilities alone, financial strain, divorce, grief, moments where I had absolutely nothing left to give. But I've never wanted to only talk about surviving those seasons. I want to talk about what they taught me.
"I'm someone who turns pain into purpose."
By day, I work in IT and telecommunications in a management role — but my heart has always leaned toward social work and psychology, toward understanding people, their struggles, and the stories behind their behaviour. I think that's why I ended up here, telling this one.
Through my videos and posts, I try to give a voice to caregivers and families affected by disability — speaking honestly about the parts people rarely see: the exhaustion, the hospital visits, the physical strain, the financial pressure, the complicated love between siblings, the grief that sits right next to the joy. If there's one thread running through everything I write, it's this: life is fragile, relationships require intention, kindness matters, growth requires change, and sometimes strength is simply continuing when life has handed you more than you thought you could carry.
I have a spiritual side that shows up in how I see everything — through lessons, seasons, faith, and purpose. Even on the hardest days, I ask, "What is this teaching me?" instead of letting the hardship be the whole story.
In one paragraph
I've been shaped by responsibility, loss, love, and survival. I carry people — sometimes literally, always emotionally — and I keep searching for meaning in every season. I'm not strong because life has been easy; I'm strong because life demanded strength from me, and even on the days I feel completely empty, I keep showing up. My story isn't only about caregiving or loss. It's about rebuilding, becoming, and finding purpose in the life I was given. And if there's one thing I hope you take from it — it's that you're not as alone as you think.
The Book
Not What I Ordered
A Caregiver's Journey of Love, Sacrifice, Strength & Unseen Battles
I wrote this book because caregiving changed me in ways I couldn't explain in a caption or a two-minute video. This is the fuller version — the sacrifices no one sees, the days I carried more than I thought I could, and the faith that kept me standing anyway.
It's a story of chosen love and daily sacrifice, but it's also about what happens when life hands you something you never asked for — and you choose it anyway, over and over again.
